Train Your Dog to Walk Properly

Jacob Arndell, February 13, 2025

Training your dog to walk properly on a leash is essential for creating enjoyable and stress-free walks. Whether you’re dealing with pulling, jumping, or simply want a more pleasant walking experience, here’s how to teach your dog to walk politely:

1. Choose the Right Equipment

Start with a sturdy leash and a comfortable collar or harness. A 4-6 foot leash is ideal, as it gives you enough control without being too restrictive. Avoid using retractable leashes, as they encourage pulling and can make training harder off leash training.

2. Start in a Calm Environment

Begin training in a quiet, distraction-free area like your backyard or a quiet street. This will allow your dog to focus on the task at hand without the distractions of people, other dogs, or busy traffic.

3. Get Your Dog’s Attention

Before starting your walk, make sure your dog is focused on you. Hold a treat near their nose or use a favorite toy to catch their attention. Once you have their focus, you’re ready to begin.

4. Teach the “Heel” Command

The “heel” command helps your dog learn to walk at your side. As you begin walking, use the command “heel” and encourage your dog to stay close to you with treats and praise. When they walk beside you without pulling, reward them.

5. Stop and Redirect Pulling

If your dog starts to pull ahead, stop walking immediately. Wait for them to return to your side before you continue walking. This teaches them that pulling doesn’t get them anywhere and encourages them to stay close to you.

6. Reward Good Behavior

Whenever your dog walks calmly by your side, reward them with treats and praise. Positive reinforcement helps your dog associate good behavior with rewards, encouraging them to repeat it.

7. Increase Difficulty Gradually

Once your dog has mastered walking calmly in a low-distraction environment, start adding distractions like other people, dogs, or different environments. Gradually increase the level of difficulty to help your dog generalize the behavior to all situations.

8. Be Consistent and Patient

Training takes time and consistency. Keep your sessions short and fun, and be patient. If your dog struggles, go back to basics and reinforce positive behavior. With regular practice, your dog will learn to walk properly on a leash.

Conclusion

Training your dog to walk properly on a leash creates a more enjoyable experience for both of you. By starting with the right equipment, using positive reinforcement, and being patient, you’ll soon have a dog that walks calmly by your side. Happy walking!
